This patch addresses the circular dependency issues and code quality
concerns identified in QA by introducing a clean architectural solution.
Changes:
1. Created Koha::Plugins::Loader - A lightweight plugin loader with
minimal dependencies that can be safely called during early
initialization. Uses DBIx::Class when available for proper
transaction support, falls back to raw DBI for early init.
2. Added Koha::Database::table_exists() - Consolidated table checking
logic into a reusable method that can be called as both class and
instance method.
3. Simplified C4::Context BEGIN block - Reduced from ~120 lines to
~13 lines (91% reduction). Removed XML::Simple dependency and
manual database connection code.
4. Updated Koha::Plugins::get_enabled_plugins() - Now delegates to
the Loader module for consistency.
5. Updated C4::Installer::TableExists - Delegates to the new
Koha::Database::table_exists method.
This addresses all QA concerns:
- Eliminates XML::Simple usage (David Cook)
- Uses Koha::Database instead of manual DBI (David Cook)
- Reuses table checking logic (Nick Clemens)
- Eliminates circular dependencies (Paul Derscheid)
- Much cleaner and maintainable code
Test plan:
1. Run tests:
prove t/db_dependent/Koha/Database.t
prove t/db_dependent/Koha/Plugins/Loader.t
prove t/db_dependent/Koha/Plugins/Plugins.t
2. All tests should pass
3. Install and enable a plugin via the UI
4. Verify plugin hooks are called correctly
5. Verify no regressions in plugin functionality

This patch adds hooks to allow 'Valuebuilder' plugins to be installable
using the standard plugin architecture for Koha. This enables cataloguing
plugins to be dynamically installed, enabled, and disabled through the
plugin system rather than being hardcoded framework components.
Test plan:
1. Install the example valuebuilder plugin from GitHub
(https://github.com/Jacobomara901/koha-plugin-value-builder)
2. Go to Administration > Plugins
3. Verify the valuebuilder plugin appears in the plugins list
4. Enable/disable the plugin and confirm the custom valuebuilder
appears/disappears in the framework configuration
5. Assign the custom valuebuilder to a MARC subfield in the
bibliographic framework
6. Create/edit a bibliographic record and verify the valuebuilder
button appears next to the configured subfield
7. Click the valuebuilder button and confirm it functions correctly
8. Disable the plugin and verify the valuebuilder button disappears
9. Re-enable the plugin and confirm functionality is restored
10. Uninstall the plugin and verify it's completely removed

3) Notice you're presented the login screen. Login using koha:koha
4) Notice you're shown the plugin's respective tool page. It looks like you're authenticated but you're not. Click on any of the top links e.g. 'Circulation' or 'Patrons'.
5) Notice you're shown the login page again.
6) Apply patch. Repeat. Step 5 should no longer show the login page but instead the page you clicked on.

Our code assumes that plugin version will be purely numeric ( e.g. 1.2.3 ) but many plugin authors ( including myself ) use the format "v1.2.3".
This causes warnings as we use a numeric comparison on the version numbers.

This patch adds a try/catch block when instantiating plugins. Calling
->new on a plugin eventually triggers a call to ->install (this has
always been like this since bug 7804). If the ->install method is
somehow borked, then the process dies. We need to prevent that, and
report back some error took place. That's what this patch does.
The same happens to the ->upgrade.
To test:

2. Restart plack (just in case)
=> SUCCESS: All good
3. Manually change its install method to:
sub install {
die "plugin, die!";
}

On bug 17591 we discovered that there was something weird going on with
the way we export and use subroutines/modules.
This patch tries to standardize our EXPORT to use EXPORT_OK only.
That way we will need to explicitely define the subroutine we want to
use from a module.
This patch is a squashed version of:
Bug 17600: After export.pl
Bug 17600: After perlimport
Bug 17600: Manual changes
Bug 17600: Other manual changes after second perlimports run
Bug 17600: Fix tests
And a lot of other manual changes.
export.pl is a dirty script that can be found on bug 17600.
"perlimport" is:
git clone https://github.com/oalders/App-perlimports.git
cd App-perlimports/
cpanm --installdeps .
export PERL5LIB="$PERL5LIB:/kohadevbox/koha/App-perlimports/lib"
find . \( -name "*.pl" -o -name "*.pm" \) -exec perl App-perlimports/script/perlimports --inplace-edit --no-preserve-unused --filename {} \;
The ideas of this patch are to:
* use EXPORT_OK instead of EXPORT
* perltidy the EXPORT_OK list
* remove '&' before the subroutine names
* remove some uneeded use statements
* explicitely import the subroutines we need within the controllers or
modules
Note that the private subroutines (starting with _) should not be
exported (and not used from outside of the module except from tests).
EXPORT vs EXPORT_OK (from
https://www.thegeekstuff.com/2010/06/perl-exporter-examples/)
"""
Export allows to export the functions and variables of modules to user’s namespace using the standard import method. This way, we don’t need to create the objects for the modules to access it’s members.
@EXPORT and @EXPORT_OK are the two main variables used during export operation.
@EXPORT contains list of symbols (subroutines and variables) of the module to be exported into the caller namespace.
@EXPORT_OK does export of symbols on demand basis.
"""
If this patch caused a conflict with a patch you wrote prior to its
push:
* Make sure you are not reintroducing a "use" statement that has been
removed
* "$subroutine" is not exported by the C4::$MODULE module
means that you need to add the subroutine to the @EXPORT_OK list
* Bareword "$subroutine" not allowed while "strict subs"
means that you didn't imported the subroutine from the module:
- use $MODULE qw( $subroutine list );
You can also use the fully qualified namespace: C4::$MODULE::$subroutine

To make internationalised plug-ins, it may be useful to get the lang
from C4::Languages::getlanguage. This patch adds
C4::Languages::getlanguage result to a LANG variable which is sent to
the template plugin.
In your plugin, you can add a i18n directory containing
lang[-DIALECT].inc files with a TOKENS hash like this:
[%
TOKENS = {
PLUGIN_NAME = "Mannequin"
PRESENTATION = "Voici un example d'outil."
CLICK_ME = "Cliquez moi !"
}
%]
The plugin template can then include such a lang[-DIALECT].inc with a
hash containing all the plugin strings:
[% TRY %]
[% PROCESS "$PLUGIN_DIR/i18n/${LANG}.inc" %]
[% CATCH %]
[% PROCESS "$PLUGIN_DIR/i18n/default.inc" %]
[% END %]
The strings are then printed in the template with something like:
[% TOKENS.PRESENTATION %]
Test plan:
1. apply patch
2. install, enable and run BULAC Mannequin plugin
3. it should print stuff in english by default
4. install french French (fr-FR)
5. change you Koha lang to French
6. run again the plugin
7. ho là là! French!

ideas in this patch are taken.

From a plugin template it is useful to be able to include other templates with
[% INCLUDE %] directives. But TT module is used by Koha with absolute paths.
Relative paths are forbidden for security reasons. A new param [% PLUGIN_DIR %]
allow plugin templates to know where to find plugin home directory.
How to test:
1. Install kitchen-sink plugin.
2. Find tool-step1.tt file, and add this at the begining of the file:
[% INCLUDE "$PLUGIN_DIR/header.tt" %]
It ask to include a template header.tt which doesn't exit.
3. Run kitchen-sink plugin tool. You must have this error message:

On using _version_compare in plugins development, it would be nice if it
was able to be called as an object method. This way we don't need to
fully qualify it like this:
Koha::Plugins::Base::_version_compare
and we can do
$self->_version_compare
instead.
This patch implements this behavior change. It is backwards compatible
so plugins using the 'old way' don't break.

Right now, to check if a plugin is functional and what methods it exposes we load the module and test for a given method at run time. This is highly inefficient. It makes far more sense to do this at install time and store the data in the db. I believe we should store a table of methods that each plugin exposes and check that instead. Then, at install time we can test that a) the plugin can be loaded and b) add the available methods to the plugin_methods table.

If an existing plugin begins using the upgrade() method, it will never actually get triggered because the installation has already occurred and no database plugin version was stored at the time. Without that database version, the upgrade method will never be triggered.
In addition, if the plugin has no upgrade method, the installed version is never updated in the database!
Lastly, when an upgrade succeeds it prints a warning that the upgrade failed.
Test Plan:
1) Install an older version of the Kitchen sink plugin:
* https://github.com/bywatersolutions/koha-plugin-kitchen-sink/releases/download/v2.1.0/koha-plugin-kitchen-sink-v2.1.0.kpz

This patch introduces two methods to be used by plugin authors:
->output
->output_html
They are basically wrappers for the helper methods from C4::Output
(output_html_with_http_headers and output_with_http_headers).
Plugin authors can use them, or keep the current flexibility of handling
the headers themselves in their code.
The KitchenSink plugin should be updated to highlight this.

Similar to the full path test in sub themelanguage, this patch makes a
change in _get_template_file. This allows you to pass a template
outside the modules directory to get_template_and_user. (Note: the sub
badtemplatecheck already blocks bad paths.)
Especially, this would be helpful for plugins using templates. As can be
seen in Templates.pm, a change was made earlier to overwrite the filename
for a plugin in sub gettemplate. This exception can now be removed.
Also note the small change in Koha/Plugin/Base.pm; mbf_path is already
absolute and if we pass a full path, we do not need it. This allows use of
a regular Koha template or a shared template between plugins (as long as
badtemplatecheck allows the path).
What are the side-effects of this change?
[1] We should not pass absolute paths if we mean relative ones.
A follow-up patch deals with one occurrence in the codebase.
No regressions for regular use.
[2] Plugins can call get_template_and_user directly or go via get_template
in Koha/Plugin/Base (absolute paths don't go via mbf_path).
Note: replaced two single quotes in Auth.pm to show template name in test
description.
Test plan:
[1] Open some page on OPAC or staff client to trigger a template.
[2] Run t/db_dependent/Auth.t to verify not allowing some bad templates.
[3] Run t/db_dependent/Templates.t to verify an absolute path.
[4] Run t/db_dependent/Plugins.t to verify using templates in a plugin.

It would be very useful to be able to define multiple plugin directories
in the Koha conf file. This would allow for ease of plugin development
so that each plugin installed can live in its own git repository. For
compatibility, the first plugindir instance defined should be the one
used for uploading plugins via the web interface.
Test Plan:
1) Apply this patch
2) Define a second pluginsdir line in your koha-conf.xml
3) Clone the kitchen sink plugin to this new path like this:
git clone https://github.com/bywatersolutions/koha-plugin-kitchen-sink.git /path/to/new/plugins/dir
4) Restart memcached if you are running it
5) The Kitchen Sink plugin should now appear in your list of plugins!

If you run Plugin.t, the above table will still be present (when you
did not enable UseKohaPlugins). This would trigger a warning when
running the test a second time.
Why? The uninstall call does its work not completely due to a small
inconsistency in Koha::Plugins::Handler::delete when calling run
without the enable_plugins parameter.
This patch resolves that inconsistency and also removes an unneeded skip
in Plugin.t in case the KitchenSink module already exists.
Note: This is a small fix. But I wonder if the Handler routines run and
delete should not have been implemented in Koha::Plugins::Base.
Also note that plugins/plugins-uninstall.pl will not be affacted by this
change, since it checks whether the pref is enabled before calling the
delete method.
Test plan:
[1] Do not yet install this patch.
[2] Verify that plugins are enabled in koha-conf.xml.
[3] Disable UseKohaPlugins in System Preferences!
[4] Run t/db_dependent/Plugins.t.
[5] Verify that table koha_plugin_com_bywatersolutions_kitchensink_mytable
still exists. (It should have been deleted.) Remove it manually.
[6] Apply this patch.
[7] Run the test again.
[8] Verify that the table does not exist.
[9] Run the test again (without warnings).

The new security updates break previously functioning plugins, most
notably the cover flow plugin and the Ebsco EDS plugin.
Test Plan:
1) Install and configure the cover flow plugin ( http://bywatersolutions.com/koha-plugins/ )
2) Note that attempting to access coverflow.pl from the OPAC results in an error
3) Apply this patch
4) Note that coverflow.pl now output html again

Many libraries would like to be able to import various types of files as
MARC records ( citations, csv files, etc ). We can add a new function to
the plugins system to allow that kind of behavior at a very custom
level.
Test Plan:
1) Ensure you have plugins enabled and configured correctly
2) Installed the attached version 2.00 of the Kitchen Sink plugin
3) Download the attached text file
4) Browse to "Stage MARC records for import"
5) Select the downloaded text file for staging
6) After uploading, you should see a new area "Transform file to MARC:",
select "Example Kitchen-Sink Plugin" from the pulldown menu
7) Click 'Stage for import"
8) Click 'Manage staged records"
9) You should now see two new MARC records!

Trying to run a plugin results in the following error:
Software error:
Undefined subroutine &Koha::Plugins::Base::get_template_and_user called
at /home/koha/kohaclone/Koha/Plugins/Base.pm line 108.
The is caused by the change from 'use C4::Auth' to 'require C4::Auth'
which does not export get_template_and_user.
Test Plan:
1) Install the KitchenSink plugin
2) Try to run the report, tool or configuration for the plugin
3) Note the error
4) Apply the patch
5) Try again
