This patch addresses the circular dependency issues and code quality
concerns identified in QA by introducing a clean architectural solution.
Changes:
1. Created Koha::Plugins::Loader - A lightweight plugin loader with
minimal dependencies that can be safely called during early
initialization. Uses DBIx::Class when available for proper
transaction support, falls back to raw DBI for early init.
2. Added Koha::Database::table_exists() - Consolidated table checking
logic into a reusable method that can be called as both class and
instance method.
3. Simplified C4::Context BEGIN block - Reduced from ~120 lines to
~13 lines (91% reduction). Removed XML::Simple dependency and
manual database connection code.
4. Updated Koha::Plugins::get_enabled_plugins() - Now delegates to
the Loader module for consistency.
5. Updated C4::Installer::TableExists - Delegates to the new
Koha::Database::table_exists method.
This addresses all QA concerns:
- Eliminates XML::Simple usage (David Cook)
- Uses Koha::Database instead of manual DBI (David Cook)
- Reuses table checking logic (Nick Clemens)
- Eliminates circular dependencies (Paul Derscheid)
- Much cleaner and maintainable code
Test plan:
1. Run tests:
prove t/db_dependent/Koha/Database.t
prove t/db_dependent/Koha/Plugins/Loader.t
prove t/db_dependent/Koha/Plugins/Plugins.t
2. All tests should pass
3. Install and enable a plugin via the UI
4. Verify plugin hooks are called correctly
5. Verify no regressions in plugin functionality

Database connections with TLS require client private keys
and certificates for authentication but MariaDB also supports
authentication by user and password.
This patch allows omitting the TLS options for certificate based
client authentication.
This is not easily testable within a development environment like ktd.
But the patch has been verified by different parties on
production and testing systems installed with Debian packages.
0) Apply patch.
1) Configure the database to support TLS connections.
2) Set "<tls>yes</tls>" in the config section in koha-conf.xml.
3) Run "koha-plack --reload <koha_instance>".
4) Open Koha's staff interface in the browser.
5) Observe an internal server error.
6) Apply patch.
7) Repeat step 3 and 4.
8) Observe the error is gone.
9) Run "prove -v t/db_dependent/Koha/Database.t"

The goal is to be able to build a database handler (dbh) and to execute
queries without loading unnecessary stuff. This will be useful to reduce
memory usage of daemons that need to check the database
periodically
The patch provides a new method Koha::Database::dbh which returns a
database handler without loading the DBIx::Class schema. This method is
also used by DBIx::Class, so whether you use DBI or DBIx::Class, the
same method is used to initialize the connection.
The patch also moves some code in order to avoid loading C4::Context:
- C4::Context::timezone moves to Koha::Config
- C4::Context::db_scheme2dbi moves to Koha::Database
To measure memory usage I used the following commands:
* before the patch:
perl -MKoha::Database \
-E 'Koha::Database->schema->storage->dbh->do("select 1");' \
-E '$|=1; say $$; sleep 2' \
| while read pid; do ps -p $pid -o rss=; done
* after the patch:
perl -MKoha::Database \
-E 'Koha::Database->dbh->do("select 1");' \
-E '$|=1; say $$; sleep 2' \
| while read pid; do ps -p $pid -o rss=; done
It will give you the RSS (Resident Set Size) of the perl process in kB
What I get:
* before the patch: between 96.9MB and 97.2MB
* after the patch: between 17.8MB and 18.2MB
Note that if a timezone is configured (either from $KOHA_CONF or
TZ environment variable), Koha will load DateTime::Timezone to check if
it's valid, and it increases RSS to 36MB
Another interesting metric is the number of modules loaded:
* before the patch:
perl -MKoha::Database \
-E 'Koha::Database->schema->storage->dbh;' \
-E 'say scalar keys %INC'
Result: 567
* after the patch:
perl -MKoha::Database \
-E 'Koha::Database->dbh;' \
-E 'say scalar keys %INC'
Result: 51
Test plan:
1. Apply the patch & restart starman
2. Make sure Koha is still ok (ie. can access the database, does not
have encoding issues, ...)
3. Run the tests in t/Context.t, t/Koha/Config.t,
t/db_dependent/Koha/Database.t, t/timezones.t

On bug 17591 we discovered that there was something weird going on with
the way we export and use subroutines/modules.
This patch tries to standardize our EXPORT to use EXPORT_OK only.
That way we will need to explicitely define the subroutine we want to
use from a module.
This patch is a squashed version of:
Bug 17600: After export.pl
Bug 17600: After perlimport
Bug 17600: Manual changes
Bug 17600: Other manual changes after second perlimports run
Bug 17600: Fix tests
And a lot of other manual changes.
export.pl is a dirty script that can be found on bug 17600.
"perlimport" is:
git clone https://github.com/oalders/App-perlimports.git
cd App-perlimports/
cpanm --installdeps .
export PERL5LIB="$PERL5LIB:/kohadevbox/koha/App-perlimports/lib"
find . \( -name "*.pl" -o -name "*.pm" \) -exec perl App-perlimports/script/perlimports --inplace-edit --no-preserve-unused --filename {} \;
The ideas of this patch are to:
* use EXPORT_OK instead of EXPORT
* perltidy the EXPORT_OK list
* remove '&' before the subroutine names
* remove some uneeded use statements
* explicitely import the subroutines we need within the controllers or
modules
Note that the private subroutines (starting with _) should not be
exported (and not used from outside of the module except from tests).
EXPORT vs EXPORT_OK (from
https://www.thegeekstuff.com/2010/06/perl-exporter-examples/)
"""
Export allows to export the functions and variables of modules to user’s namespace using the standard import method. This way, we don’t need to create the objects for the modules to access it’s members.
@EXPORT and @EXPORT_OK are the two main variables used during export operation.
@EXPORT contains list of symbols (subroutines and variables) of the module to be exported into the caller namespace.
@EXPORT_OK does export of symbols on demand basis.
"""
If this patch caused a conflict with a patch you wrote prior to its
push:
* Make sure you are not reintroducing a "use" statement that has been
removed
* "$subroutine" is not exported by the C4::$MODULE module
means that you need to add the subroutine to the @EXPORT_OK list
* Bareword "$subroutine" not allowed while "strict subs"
means that you didn't imported the subroutine from the module:
- use $MODULE qw( $subroutine list );
You can also use the fully qualified namespace: C4::$MODULE::$subroutine

memcached address and namespace are in $KOHA_CONF, so it is required to
read it before being able to access the cache. And after that,
configuration is kept in memory forever. Storing this in memcached is
useless and even counter-productive, since Koha reads both the file and
the cache
This patch addresses this issue by removing the cache-related code from
C4::Context->new.
It means that C4::Context->new will always read the configuration file,
so this patch also replaces inappropriate calls to
C4::Context->new->config by appropriate calls to C4::Context->config
It also fixes a bug where C4::Context->new would ignore the filepath
given in parameters if there was something in cache.
It also removes a problematic call to Koha::Caches->get_instance.
Because this call was outside of any subroutine, it would have happened
before the initialization of $C4::Context::context (which happen in
C4::Context::import)
Test plan:
1. Do not apply the patch yet
2. Add the following line at the beginning of Koha::Config::read_from_file
warn "read_from_file($file)";
This will allow you to check how many times the file is read.
3. Flush memcached and restart starman
4. Check the logs, you should see "read_from_file" a bunch of times
5. Apply the patch
6. Re-add the line from step 2
7. Flush memcached and restart starman
8. Check the logs, you should see "read_from_file" only once
9. Make sure the memcached config from $KOHA_CONF (memcached_servers,
memcached_namespace) is taken into account by checking the About page

DBIC has its own HandleError, and so it does not work to unset
RaiseError or PrintError if unsafe is not set (what we don't want here).
The idea of this patch is to overwrite the HandleError when we need it:
Either if KOHA_DB_DO_NOT_RAISE_OR_PRINT_ERROR is set (misc4dev)
Or if the installer is triggered (we don't want to explode if the DB
does not exist).
There is an additional trick, when the installer is completed, we want
to restore the original behaviour, and so a disconnect is made.
Note that during the installer we want to display eventual SQL errors,
that's why we still display the errors.

This is a follow-up for bug 22001.
The patch "Bug 22001: Set unsafe only if RaiseError is not set" proved that
unsafe => 1 and RaiseError => 0 was wrong.
We should move forward and turn RaiseError for the UI, and... see what's happening.
The change goes to the right direction, but we need to know how big is the task
to have a stable release with these parameters correctly set.
We will have a lot of fun once this patch is pushed! :)
Test plan:
0. Does not apply the patch
1. Add, somewhere in mainpage.pl
C4::Acquisition::NewBasket();
2. restart_all
3. Hit the mainpage
=> Hum... nothing happens! However there is an error in the logs
DBI Exception: DBD::mysql::db do failed: Column 'booksellerid' cannot be null
No basket has been created!
4. Apply the patch, restart_all
5. Hit the mainpage
=> Here we go, there was something wrong and the user is aware of that!

Sooooo....
That was tricky, and the solution looks trivial.
However it's not.
We have unsafe set for "historical reason".
Having it on when RaiseError is on have the effect of overwritting the
DBIC error handler.
The problem is:
t/db_dependent/Circulation/MarkIssueReturned.t (and other tests) is failing with:
# expecting: Koha::Exceptions::Object::BadValue
# found: DBIx::Class::Exception ({UNKNOWN}: Can't locate object method "rethrow" via package "DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Incorrect datetime value: 'bad_date' for column 'returndate' at row 1 [for Statement "UPDATE `issues` SET `returndate` = ? WHERE ( `issue_id` = ? )" with ParamValues: 0='bad_date', 1=238] at /usr/share/perl5/DBIx/Class/Storage/DBI.pm line
In Koha::Object->store, the exception is not a DBIx::Class::Exception object (as we except), but
a string (on which we cannot call rethrow).
Swithing unsafe off restores the expected behavior.
To make sure the UI will not be affected, it is only turned off when
RaiseError is set.
The situation is still wrong (for UI), from the POD https://metacpan.org/pod/DBIx::Class::Storage::DBI (/unsafe)
"""
Note that your custom settings can cause Storage to malfunction, especially if you set a HandleError handler that suppresses exceptions and/or disable RaiseError.
"""
And also https://metacpan.org/release/DBIx-Class/source/lib/DBIx/Class/Storage/DBI.pm#L1531
Many thanks Tomas for the digging exploration!
We need to turn RaiseError and remove the unsafe flag, for UI as well,
but that should be done at the beginning of a dev cycle.

In some tests we want to know if we are in a testing environment.
When run the usual way, our trick works, the perl interpreter matches 'prove':
$ENV{_} eq 'prove'
In other situations, we have the KOHA_NO_TABLE_LOCKS environment variables, for the SendCirculationAlert race conditions (see bug 15854 and bug 18364).
For unknown reasons, Jenkins runs the tests with /usr/bin/perl.
This patch suggests to rename KOHA_NO_TABLE_LOCKS and use KOHA_TESTING
instead, when prove is not used (or not correctly detected as it it the
case for Jenkins)

So far we have bug 17258 (omnibus to list the issue we have with the new
default SQL modes), bug 20144 (which fixed our test suite with these
modes) and bug 20229.
This last one forces the SQL modes to avoid to modify the DBMS
configuration and define the SQL modes we support.
We should let developers catch the issues and report/fix them.
Also Jenkins must alert us if there is a regression with the test suite.
I suggest to enable the problematic SQL modes on dev installs.

Most of Koha depends on the local timezone of the server, except for Koha::Database which support an ENV override with the key TZ.
We should take this a step further. We should not only accept the TZ environment variable for all of Koha, we should really be able to set the timezone in the koha conf file as well so we don't have to pass that environment variable to things like cronjobs and one-off scripts.
Test Plan:
1) Apply this patch
2) Set a timzone in your koha_conf file, that is *not* your local time zone
Available timzones are listed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tz_database_time_zones
3) Restart apache/plack
4) Perform some actions, check the timestamps in the database and in the
html output, note they are for the set timezone and not the local
timezone.

In our installation procedure we ask the administrator to edit the
MySQL|MariaDB configuration file to specify the SQL modes we support
(see bug 17258 comment 6 and 7 for more information).
We are on the way to catch and fix all these issues and support these
stricter modes (as they highlight problem in our codebase/DB structure)
but in the meanwhile it may be good to remove this step and revert the
changes when we are ready.
TODO:

- Edit the wiki page to remove this step
Test plan:
0. Do not apply this patch
1. Edit your MySQL|MariaDB config and add:

to the [mysqld] section (or edit it)
2. Restart your DBMS
3. Try to make the app explode (watch the logs)

(reasonable defaults are provided). Settings <tls>, <ca>, <cert> and <key> are
added in koha-conf.xml
2) If <tls>yes</tls> in koha-conf.xml, the installer and database connection
scripts add the TLS options in both DBI connection strings and mysql command
line

it's done in C4::Context for $dbh.

This patch makes Koha::Database lazy-load the whole Koha::Schema libraries.
It doesn't seem to have negative effects, and makes scripts not using
DBIx::Class notably faster [1].
Regards
[1] If you read the DBIx::Class::Schema docs, it explains that it it uses
Module::Find to load all schema files...

Happy to sign this one. The only extra comment would be that DBIx::Class
performance issues remain after this patch, but is being handled in a
different bug.

Since we're passing an existing DBI database handle to
DBIC, and that handle doesn't have RaiseError set to true
by default, don't let DBIC override that -- for now.
Test plan: verify that the DB-dependent test suite passes.

Right now there is no connection between the database handles used by
C4::Context::dbh and Koha::Datbase/Schema. This makes it impossible to
use transactions in unit tests to temporarily modify the database to
test subroutines that take advantage of Koha::Database. This patch fixes
that issue.
Test Plan:
1) Apply this patch
2) prove -v t/db_dependent/ILSDI_Services.t and
prove -v t/db_dependent/Items.t and
prove -v t/db_dependent/Circulation_issue.t should
all start passing

This patch fixes an issue whereby the DBIx::Class schema objects
were not connecting to the underlying database in UTF8 mode. This
most visibility manifested as patron list pages not displaying
diacritics correctly.
To test:
[1] Create a patron list, and make sure that it contains at least
one patron whose name or patron category description contains
a non-ASCII character.
[2] View the list contents; the diacritics should appear mangled.
[3] Apply the patch.
[4] View the patron list again. This time, the diacritics should
be displayed correctly. Note that Apache will also log
"list.pl: Wide character in print ...", but this is the lesser
of two evils.
[5] Verify that prove -v t/db_dependent/Koha_Database.t passes.
[6] (extra credit) Verify that t/db_dependent/Koha_Database.t
passes when connect to a PostgreSQL database.

This patch restores the ability to request a DBI database handle
or a DBIx::Class schema object connected to a PostgreSQL database.
To address the concerns raised in bug 7188, only "mysql" and "Pg"
are recognized as valid DB schemes. If anything else is passed
to C4::Context::db_scheme2dbi or set as the db_scheme in the Koha
configuration file, the DBD driver to load is assumed to be "mysql".
Note that this patch drops any pretense of Oracle support.
To test:
[1] Apply patch, and verify that the database-dependent tests
pass when run against a MySQL Koha database.
[2] To test against PostgreSQL, create a Pg database and
edit koha-conf.xml to set db_scheme to Pg (and adjust
the other DB connection parameters appropriately). The
following tests should pass, at minimum:
t/Context.t
t/db_dependent/Koha_Database.t

Works as described, some additional notes:
- Installed Postgres following
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/PostgreSQL
- Created a database user koha
- Created a database koha
- Changed the koha-conf.xml file
<db_scheme>Pg</db_scheme>
<database>koha</database>
<hostname>localhost</hostname>
<port>5432</port>
<user>koha</user>
<pass>xxxx</pass>
- Installed libdbd-pg-perl
- Ran the web installer until step 3 everything looked ok
Step 3 complains:
Password for user koha: psql: fe_sendauth: no password supplied
- Both t/Context.t and t/db_dependent/Koha_Database.t pass

This corrects a failing test and follows a recommendation
by the maintainer of DBIx::Class. This patch also
adds a couple new directories for t/00-testcritic.t to
check.
